Dynamic Imaging of Cognition and Neuromodulation Laboratory

Under the direction of Tony Wilson, Ph.D., the Dynamic Imaging of Cognition and Neuromodulation (DICoN) Laboratory utilizes advanced functional and structural neuroimaging to understand how neural activity in large-scale human brain networks gives rise to normal and aberrant cognitive processes. Specifically, the team uses magnetoencephalography (MEG) to measure the dynamics of brain function in real time, and combines high-resolution structural MRI with computational neuroanatomical techniques to quantify the thickness of cortical gray matter in healthy children and adults, as well as those with neurological and/or psychiatric disorders.

Beyond MEG and structural MRI, the team also uses functional MRI, diffusion-weighted imaging, and noninvasive brain stimulation methods to address emerging questions in basic and translational neuroscience.

Our Studies

Developmental Multimodal Imaging of Neurocognitive Dynamics (Dev-MIND) (Ages 6-15)
The purpose of this study is to understand how the healthy brain matures and how hormones influence this development.
Modulation of Spontaneous Cortical Activity by tDCS: BRAIN Initiative I (Ages 19-35, 55-72)
The purpose of this study is to measure the effects of aging on brain activity and to use a therapeutic technique called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).
Advanced Brain Imaging: HIV (Ages 19-80+)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how HIV affects brain activity, cognitive functioning and aging in people who have HIV as compared to those who do not.
Advanced Brain Imaging: Cannabis (Ages 19-80+)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how chronic cannabis use affects brain activity and cognitive functioning differently in people who are living with HIV compared to those who are not living with HIV.
Mental Health Effects of Home Radon Exposure (Ages 12- 17)
Purpose/Overview: Radon is a natural gas that can build up in homes, especially in eastern Nebraska and Iowa.
